In August 2010 I was invited to contribute to the Art Directors Club’s 90th anniversary project — a collection of new work from invited artists and designers marking ninety years of the club. I briefly considered making it a collaboration, but in the end it felt like a piece to sit down with alone.
By that point I’d been drawing in fine liner for a long time, and the invitation was a good reason to keep going with it — this time knowing the result would hang in New York. Cube Organ was begun while I was living in Berlin and finished when I got back, where it could finally be scanned. Ink leaves no room for second thoughts: the form accumulates cube by cube, each one committed to as it’s drawn.
The drawing was submitted to the ADC in early September 2010 and exhibited at the ADC Gallery on 21 September, alongside the rest of the anniversary project.
